چکیده

Abstract. This article describes the implementation of grid refinement in ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) modeling system. It basically follows classical two-way nesting approach known from widely used mesoscale models like MM5 or WRF, but it differs way feedback fine grids to coarser is applied. Moreover, ICON supports vertical sense that upper boundary a nested domain may be lower than its parent domain. Compared well-established implementations on quadrilateral grids, new methods had developed for interpolating lateral conditions child domain(s). These are based radial basis functions (RBFs) and partly apply direct reconstruction prognostic variables at required points, whereas gradient-based extrapolation points other cases. The runtime flow control written such limited-area domains can processed identically except data supply. To demonstrate functionality quality ICON, idealized tests Jablonowski–Williamson test case (Jablonowski Williamson, 2006) Schär mountain wave (Schär et al., 2002) presented. results show numerical disturbances induced nest boundaries small enough negligible real applications. confirmed by experiments closely following configuration operational weather prediction DWD, which regional over Europe has significant positive impact forecast Northern Hemisphere.

Parallel Multilevel Tetrahedral Grid Refinement

In this paper we analyze a parallel version of a multilevel red/green local refinement algorithm for tetrahedral meshes. The refinement method is similar to the approaches used in the UG-package [33] and by Bey [11, 12]. We introduce a new data distribution format that is very suitable for the parallel multilevel refinement algorithm. This format is called an admissible hierarchical decompositi...

AGRIF: Adaptive grid refinement in Fortran

Adaptive grid refinement in Fortran (AGRIF) is a Fortran90 package for the integration of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) features within existing finite difference codes. The package first provides model-independent Fortran90 procedures containing the different operations in an AMR process: time integration of grid hierarchy, clustering, interpolations, updates, etc. The package then creates th...

Multiscale Methods as Spatiotemporal Grid-refinement Techniques

In the last decade, multiscale methods have been developed and proposed to efficiently solve large reservoir models. These techniques allow reducing the computational cost by decreasing the size of the largest problem to be solved: the initial fine-scale problem is divided into a set of independent local problems coupled by a coarse problem which is smaller than the original problem. This appro...

Parallel Dynamic Grid Refinement for Industrial Applications

This paper covers a description of the algorithms and data-structures used in the parallel DLR TAU-Code Adaptation tool. Attention is given to the basic algorithms of the parallel anisotropic refinement and de-refinement, as well as the data-structures for distributed grids and grid hierarchy. The parallelization issues for distributed data are discussed along with the dynamic repartitioning an...
